ACFFC Projects
Area projects we are working on are listed on this page.
Casting Club: In staying with our goal, teaching the art of fly fishing
and expanding the conservation of the sport, the ACFFC has begun a Casting Club for Youth, Women, and Men. Recently the
Tres Pescados Fly Shop donated 2 sets of Youth fly rod/reel setups to be used in the first Ambergris Caye Casting Club. We are establishing the
rules, working on building a portable casting pond, contacting other areas to help form their club such as Caye Caulker, Placencia, and Belize River Lodge.
Our goal is to provide a competition team activity around precision fly casting whereby the competitors can win trophies
for their efforts of excellence with saltwater fly rod casting competing with local teams.
Fish Data Collection: We are looking to provide Bonefish and Tarpon Trust (BTT)
and the Belize Fisheries Department with useable data from Belize on the big-three grand slam fish in the form of a fish census.
In order to sustain a healthy fishery data is need to base any and all management decisions on. The data can be
expensive and time consuming to collect, however via our organized fishing tournament, the Tres Pescados Slam Tournament,
the fish census was conducted in 2009 and will again be conducted in 2010 modeled after the sucessful bonefish census ran in the Florida
Keys by Sandy Moret.
The fish census conducted during the tournament collects measurements, weight, sightings, group size, fish size, location and other data
to be used as a management tool in defining critical habitat, health, and population of the species.
A side effect of the census is bringing awareness of the great economic resource these three fish are to the country of Belize.
